Wayne Rooney’s podcast co-hosts were in stitches as the former Everton FC player shared the story of how he passed his driving test. The 39-year-old from Croxteth told he story in his new role as of host of the BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show.
The retired footballer, who is Manchester United’s all time top goalscorer, was destined to reach the very top of the game from the moment he scored a wondergoal in his Everton debut against Arsenal. Rooney’s talents were obvious even before this point as he said Ford signed him to a deal before he had made his debut.
On the latest episode, he spoke about his contract with the car manufacturer, which had an extra detail he didn’t realise until after he signed. He said: “I think I was 14, I signed a deal with Ford and they used to give my dad a Ford Galaxy.
“But I didn’t realise that in the contract, when I passed my driving test, my first car had to be a Ford.” Rooney added: “I had a nice purple Ford Ka with personalised number plates.
“I always remember then, a few months later, I was driving a Ford and Coleen was in a BMW X5. I actually upgraded after a couple of months to a Ford KA convertible as well. When you’re that age and you pass your driving test you just want to drive any car.”
Co-hosts Kelly Somers and Kae Kurd were in stitches when Rooney revealed he passed his driving test after just three lessons. Kelly said: “I’ve never heard anyone do that.”
The striker said: “I’m pretty sure the fella who took my test was an Everton fan.” Fans took to the comments and shared laughing emojis after the update.
Rooney launched his new podcast earlier this month. He attended the press launch with his wife Coleen. He shared snaps from the event on Instagram.
The post was captioned: “Great event last night celebrating the start of a new football season with @bbcsport and the launch of my new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show!”
According to the BBC, the podcast sees Rooney “dive into football’s biggest stories, career moments and legends of the game”. A hilarious moment from another episode saw Rooney share the story of his honeymoon with Coleen in Las Vegas.
In the podcast episode, which aired on Friday, August 22, Rooney described how the couple had been to a bar which was also being attended by the US Olympic basketball team. However, in photos of the night Coleen noticed something in her hair.
Rooney said: “Me and Coleen were in Las Vegas for our honeymoon, which I know is a bit strange, Vegas for our honeymoon. The US Olympic basketball team come into this bar where we were and it was all cornered off, so they’re all there like Kobe Bryant was there, LeBron.
“So because I spoke to them a few times, I went over to say hello and the security went ‘please step away from the table, sir’. So anyway, we took all the pictures, and just pictures of me and Coleen in general through the night and I don’t know whether it was my fault or her fault but every picture she had a straw stuck in her hair.”
The couple decided to end the night with some food, however found an obstacle in their way when they arrived at McDonald’s. The fast-food restaurant was closed to walk-ins but the drive-thru remained open, and this didn’t stop the newlyweds.
They decided to grab a trolley and go through the drive-thru in-between cars. Rooney added: “Well I took her that night, I think it was, to McDonald’s. It was about 7am and as we’re going, the McDonald’s was closed, so you could only go through the drive-thru.
“I was pushing – it sounds a bit mad – I was pushing her in a shopping trolley. And so you have a car in front, you’ve got me and Coleen in the shopping trolley and a car behind us.” Asked if he and Coleen were sober, Rooney replied it was a “boss night”.
The couple married on June 12, 2008 in Italy, with a ceremony in Santa Margherita Ligure with around 60 friends and family members attending the ceremony.
