The newest series of Strictly Come Dancing officially got underway over the weekend as the professional dancers and their celebrity partners took to the dance floor for the first time to be judged in Saturday’s live show. It was an impressive opening week with some big scores for a number of the dancer partners.

One of the couples hoping to impress judges were professional dancer Vito Coppola and his partner Ellie Goldstein. Vito, who won the 2023 series with partner Ellie Leach, found out he was paired with the Gucci, Vogue and Adidas model during the show launch on Saturday, September 20.

Ellie is making history as the first ever contestant on the BBC show with Down syndrome. Ellie is a trailblazer in promoting inclusivity as she was the first ever model with Down syndrome to grace the cover of British Vogue. She was announced as the ninth member of the class of 2025.

The dance partners achieved 17 points on Saturday. They danced a Cha Cha Cha to Ariana Grande’s “yes, and?” which earned them a score of 17/40 for their first routine.

Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas each gave them four points, while Anton Du Beke awarded them five.

Speaking about the performance on Sunday, September 28, Ellie said: “Thank you all so much for the incredible love and support!I’m over the moon that so many of you enjoyed watching me dance last night.

“I’m honestly having the time of my life. This really is a dream come true! I feel so lucky to be surrounded by the most amazing support team: my wonderful family, my agents, the whole Strictly crew, and of course my incredible dance partner Vito.”

The model added: “I couldn’t ask for better. Dancing on this stage makes me feel strong, sassy, confident, and completely myself — I’m loving every single minute!”

After fans speculated they had seen the Strictly contestant upset during Saturday’s show, she clarified the situation, telling followers: “Just a little note: sometimes my eyes get watery after a long day. I promise I’m not upset! I’m doing so well and feeling So happy, and your concern truly means the world.”

She finished her message to fans: “And one more thing — yes, I have Down syndrome, but it doesn’t define me. Not even close. It’s actually the least interesting thing about me.”

Ellie has formed a close bond with Vito already, despite the early stages of the BBC dance competition. After the post from Ellie, Vito commented “I am so proud of you and I will always make sure you have the best time.

“Enjoy the time with your family and rest well today…new week new dance. See you tomorrow my firefly (your big brother Gas Gas).” Vito wasn’t the only person to share supportive messages for Ellie.

Alison Hammond commented “You’re a star” and former Strictly winner Ellie Leach wrote “amazing” alongside a clapping hand emoji. Coronation Street star Cait Fitton replied “This is incredible!! Super you are”, while current Strictly contestant Vicky Pattison added “You are both amazing!”
