One Premier League executive has named an “appropriate” punishment that Manchester City could face if they are found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules
One Premier League executive believes Manchester City could face a huge points deduction “between 70 and 80 points” if they are found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules. A hearing against City’s 115 charges is reportedly set to begin next month.
In early 2023, City were charged with breaching the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules over 100 times between 2009 and 2018 and, as a result, an independent commission is set to hear the case against City, who vehemently deny any wrongdoing. Last season, Everton, twice, and Nottingham Forest were handed points deductions by the Premier League as a punishment for failing to adhere to the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Consequently, one executive at an unnamed Premier League club believes City could be in line for a punishment so staggering that it would almost certainly resign City to a season in the Championship. Speaking to The Athletic, the executive said: “The collective view I’ve heard is that an appropriate sanction would have to be a points deduction so substantial — we are talking here between 70 and 80 points — that it guarantees City a season in the Championship.”
Meanwhile, The Times report that an outcome on the case could be reached by early 2025, just days after the Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Masters, admitted it was time for the matter to “resolve itself”.
City have won the last four Premier League titles, with Jurgen Klopp’s 2019-20 Liverpool side the last team to end the Etihad outfit’s stranglehold on the division. The Reds also finished second to City in the 2013-14 season, one of several campaigns that are is investigation.
