Meteorologist Fired After Criticizing Elon Musk’s Gesture

A Milwaukee-based weather reporter has been dismissed from a local television station just a day after she criticized Elon Musk on social media for what some perceived as a controversial gesture. Musk, now leading the Department of Government Efficiency, sparked debate during an event at Capital One Arena following Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th U.S. president. His action—thumping his chest and raising his arm—led many online to compare it to a troubling historical salute.

News director Jessie Garcia confirmed in an internal memo that meteorologist Sam Kuffel is no longer employed at CBS58. She also stated that the station is actively searching for a replacement.

Kuffel had taken to Instagram to express her disapproval, posting a photo and claiming that Musk had repeated the gesture twice during the event. Frustrated, she wrote in strong language that she wanted nothing to do with those who supported him. She further emphasized her stance by using a GIF from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” with a caption that called Musk a derogatory term.

Her remarks drew backlash from conservative radio host Dan O’Donnell, who condemned her for spreading misinformation and using offensive language. Kuffel had been with the station for over five years and previously worked at WAOW-TV after earning a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2016.

As the debate escalated online, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) stepped in, acknowledging the sensitivity of the moment. They clarified that Musk’s action was simply an enthusiastic gesture and not a Nazi salute. They urged people to extend understanding, emphasizing the need for unity in these divisive times.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also weighed in, defending Musk and calling the accusations against him unfounded.
