Gary Lineker has confirmed that he will step down from Match of the Day at the end of the current season, officially ending his long-standing role with the BBC. It has also been agreed that he won’t return to lead coverage of the 2026 World Cup—a mutual decision reached between Lineker and the broadcaster.
The decision comes after controversy surrounding a pro-Palestinian video he reshared on Instagram, which included a rat emoji that many interpreted as antisemitic. Lineker later apologised, stating he hadn’t intended to cause offence. He originally revealed plans to leave the show in November, but it’s now clear he’ll be cutting ties with the BBC altogether.
In a public statement, Lineker reflected on his career, saying:
“Football has always been central to my life—both as a player and a presenter. I care deeply about the sport and about the work I’ve done with the BBC. I would never knowingly post anything antisemitic—it goes against everything I stand for. Still, I understand the hurt caused and I’m truly sorry. Stepping away now feels like the right thing to do.”
His Instagram post drew nearly 20,000 comments, including messages of support from fellow public figures. Comedian John Bishop praised him, writing:
“Gary, you leave behind a legacy not just as a footballer, but as a presenter and as a person. Best of luck with what’s next.”
Alan Shearer, Lineker’s longtime colleague on Match of the Day and co-host of their podcast The Rest Is Football, also offered his thanks: “Thank you for everything.”
In an earlier statement, Lineker said he regretted sharing content that included offensive references and reiterated his opposition to antisemitism, saying he accepted full responsibility for what he described as a mistake.
BBC Director-General Tim Davie commented:
“Gary has acknowledged the error he made. As a result, we’ve agreed he will step back from presenting duties after this season. Gary has been a key figure in our football coverage for more than 20 years. His insight and passion have shaped sports broadcasting and earned him widespread respect. We thank him for his outstanding contribution.”
