Under that catchy stage name is Rebecca Lucy Taylor, who embraced the moniker back in 2015, alongside exploring her creativity through art and film, reports Gloucestershire Live.

Rebecca, 38, has revealed that she actually sat on the name Self Esteem for about six years before sharing it with the world.

Dishing the details on BBC Introducing, she quipped: “I wanted to call it Sex Appeal or Self Esteem…cos band names are bad, there’s no good ones. But I probably should have just called it Rebecca Lucy Taylor!”

Her journey to solo stardom was sparked by the fierce queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race, giving her the confidence needed to step out solo from her band days. She’s also credited musician Jamie T, whose encouragement was pivotal in pushing her to drop those initial tracks.

A big break came in 2018 when she snagged a record deal, following it up with her debut album the next year, as well as performances at festivals including Glastonbury and Latitude.

Her second album, Prioritise Pleasure, hit the shelves in 2021 after a series of successful singles. This was followed by sold-out tours and numerous festival appearances, with her third album, A Complicated Woman, set to drop on 25 April.

In 2023, Rebecca received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Sheffield, and she even has a photographic portrait displayed in London’s National Portrait Gallery.

When she’s not making music, Rebecca cheers for Sheffield Wednesday FC, a passion inherited from her great-grandfather who once played for the club.

She’s been candid about her journey with therapy to better her mental health and has openly identified as bisexual in interviews. As for her love life, it remains a mystery.
