Gavin and Stacey fans left ‘screaming’ as iconic fishing trip finally shown

The cast of Gavin and Stacey reunited for a one-off special to mark the finale of the popular sitcom, and it featured a surprise glimpse of a long-running mystery that has been teased to fans throughout the show’s run

Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell had fans buzzing with excitement on New Year’s Day over formerly unseen footage revealing a glimpse into Uncle Bryn and Jason’s infamous fishing trip. The behind the scenes special featured the cast’s reflections, led by creators and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones, on their journey since the show’s debut in 2007. The documentary also included appearances from celebrity enthusiasts like Minnie Driver, Richard Curtis, and Lena Dunham who shared their adoration for the cherished BBC sitcom.

But it was an unexpected clip in the closing credits, seemingly from over 30 years ago, that truly got tongues wagging. Presented as a DIY video, the clip captured Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason (Rob Wilfort) on their much-speculated fishing trip — a source of mystery and tension through all three series.

Even though it emerged in the final episode, shown on Christmas Day, that Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) knew the true events of the trip, fans were left mostly in the dark. Enticingly hinted at but never revealed, the speculation around the notorious trip has been a fervent topic among viewers for years.

Then, in a sensational final moment of the documentary as the credits rolled, viewers caught a fleeting look at the secretive escapade with Bryn cheerfully greeting Jason, teasing with the line, “Who do we have here?” as he held up a large fish, and playfully declaring, “No one will go hungry in this camp tonight.”

“Enjoy your soup! ” he concluded, just before the screen cut to black.

Fans of the show took to social media to share their excitement after being treated to the unexpected footage, reports the Express. One ecstatic fan declared: “THE FISHING TRIP!!! What a way to close the entirety of this whole story!” “The fishing trip…brilliant ending,” agreed another, while someone else screamed: “THE END OF THE GAVIN AND STACEY DOCUMENTARY OH MY GOD??!!!” A fourth fan echoed the sentiment, writing: “Teasing the fishing trip in the end credits was f***ing class.”

The final ever episode of Gavin &Stacey was a surefire hit, topping Christmas Day ratings and pulling in a staggering 12.3 million viewers, marking the highest figures for any non-sporting broadcast in more than a decade. In the much-anticipated Christmas special, Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) at long last exchanged vows, bringing to a close 17 years of their on-and-off romance.

Ruth Jones, 58, opened up about the decision to unite their characters, sharing: “We know that there’s this connection, from day one when she handed him the pizza, and this love/hate relationship that produced a child is finally getting this pay-off. Which I think is what everybody wants.”
