Former EastEnders star Rita Simons has shared some personal news on social media. The actress is known for playing the role of Roxy Mitchell on the BBC soap but in recent years has played Maria Fielding on Hollyoaks. The character of Maria returned to Hollyoaks in March 2024 following a stint in prison.
During her time on the show, Rita became embroiled in some of the most explosive plots and carnage. This includes secret romances and a dramatic motorbike crash storyline. She played the long lost ex of gangster Warren Fox.
In a message shared on Instagram, Rita has announced her decision to leave the soap. She wrote: “Wanted to share a little bit of news with you Since Marie Fielding stepped into Hollyoaks village, she’s sufficiently messed up all her boys lives, Caused ALL the carnage and fallen off the wagon a few times…so her job here is done!”
The soap star added she will be saying bye to her role in the autumn, with plenty still to come from her character. In the message, Rita also reflected on her time in Liverpool. Although set in Chester, the majority of Hollyoaks is filmed at Lime Pictures’ studios in Childwall, Liverpool.
The 48-year-old said: “On a personal note, when I first came to Liverpool I was still figuring out how find balance in my mind and body after a total hysterectomy (which was the best journey I ever went on in the end!) This beautiful, welcoming city has healed me more than I can ever explain.
“I will always have such love for my second home and the wonderful people of Liverpool. But now I feel strong, I can metaphorically walk on my own again, and I need to do just that. So It’s time to thank everyone at Hollyoaks for being the best tonic I could’ve asked for.”
Rita told followers that London, her “true home” is calling and she has to follow her heart, adding that she has to listen to her soul. She ended the career announcement with: “Marie has a bit more carnage and a few laughs to unleash on the village…so until then …Thank you all for all the love and support you’ve always shown me no matter what fictional town I end up in! Where to next!!? Marie ..over and out! (Not quite yet!).”

Fans speculated about her next move in the comments. Emily wrote: “Roxy & Ronnie Mitchell rise from the dead challenge, but in all seriousness, I’m so proud of you and I love that you’re listening to your heart, London’s calling and you’re answering!”
Jay commented: “Awww mate. Gotta follow your heart. Liverpool will miss you guys. Hopefully see you before you toddle off” and Angel responded “Rita you’ve been absolutely fab as Marie! Good luck for the next adventure!”
Charlie also agreed that the character of Roxy Mitchell should never have been written out of the show, she wrote: “Albert square. Don’t even wait for them to call you and Samantha girl just both turn up and force them to write you back in it.”
Kaiyah shared the same thoughts, writing: “Please say you and your on set EE sister are rising from the dead in Albert Square.. I don’t care how or why killing off Ronnie and Roxy was the worst thing that soap did.”
