Adrien Brody has sparked outrage among fans for his Oscars antics involving girlfriend Georgina Chapman last night. The 51 year old actor scored his second Oscar win for Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist, which tells the story of a Jewish-Hungarian architect escaping World War II horrors for a new life in America.
Beating out nominees including Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), Adrien made his way to the stage after his name was announced. However, he appeared to then remember the gum in his mouth and in a shock move before collecting his award, he spat the gum into his hand.
Anticipating the awkward hand-off, Georgina ran towards him as Adrien tossed the gum her way, prompting her hastily trying to catch it.
Social media users, expressing their disbelief on X (previously known as Twitter), slammed the “degrading” exchange. Comments ranged from calling it disgusting – suggesting Brody should have put it in his pocket – to labelling him arrogant and disrespectful toward his partner.
Some reactions included: “WTH. Eww. He should have just put it in his pocket…and she goes to catch it? Pffffft,” and “Such an arrogant, self-indulgent p***k. I would never degrade my partner like this. Georgina – you’re 0 for 2 in picking men. You deserve better”, reports the Mirror.
One person said: “No shade but adrien throwing that gum at his wife was so tacky and gross.” Another viewer wrote: “Adrien Brody taking 1 whole minute to get on the stage, throwing his gum on the floor, and proceeding to have a 6.5 minute speech where he demands the orchestra to stop playing so he can keep yapping.”
Prior to her relationship with the Oscar winner, Georgina was married to disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, but separated from him after multiple claims of sexual assault emerged against him. Georgina moved on with Adrien after her divorce finalised in 2021, going public with their relationship at the Tribeca Film Festival that same year after first meeting through mutual friends in 2019.
While fans cringed at his gum-throwing antics aimed at Georgina, Adrien did pay tribute to her and her kids during his lengthy speech: “I share this with my amazing partner, Georgina, who’s not only reinvigorated my own self-worth, but my sense of value and my values. And her beautiful children Dash and India,” he declared.
“I know this is a, it’s been a roller coaster, but thank you for accepting me into your life. And Popsy’s coming home the winner.”
