Antony Cotton is a Coronation Street legend

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has been wished well as he celebrates a landmark birthday. The soap star, renowned for his role as Sean Tully on the Cobbles, has turned 50 years old today.

Fellow Corrie legend, Sally Dynevor, has been one of many to wish Antony well on his birthday. The Sally Metcalfe star shared alongside Antony with her 141,000 followers. She said: “Happy birthday to my beautiful friend @antonycotton. Have a wonderful day.” She added: “Love you.”

Antony has has been a mainstay on the Cobbles since he first joined the show in 2003. He is really close friends with Sally as he heaped praise on their strong bond when she celebrated her milestone 60th birthday.

Sally took to the comments and said: “Oooh thank you Antony.” Fans swooned over the update as Jodie said: “Aww, lovely picture of you both.”

When Antony joined the show in 2003, his onscreen counterpart was embraced into Eileen Grimshaw’s family when he became the first male machinist at Underworld and has been a mainstay in Weatherfield ever since.

Sean has been at the centre of drama throughout his time on the ITV show as one of his biggest storylines came when he agreed to impregnate Violet Wilson.

This was under the condition that Sean wouldn’t play a part in the child’s upbringing, but he backtracked on the agreement when Dylan was born.

Dylan has returned to the Cobbles and Sean’s stories now largely centre on his attempts to keep his onscreen son on the right path.

A recent storyline for Sean was when his close friend Eileen, played by Sue Cleaver, departed the Cobbles this year. In June, Sue reflected on her 25 years in Weatherfield.

She said: “Well… that’s a wrap. 25 years of laughs, tears, costumes, chaos—and one unforgettable journey. I’ll miss this character like crazy, but what a ride it’s been.
