Corrie’s Claire Sweeney ‘reprimanded by police’ for recovering stolen phone after her son’s request

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has revealed what happened after she finally tracked down the whereabouts of her stolen phone.

Recalling the incident during a recent episode of The Speakmans’ Hope Clinic podcast, the 54-year-old explained that her phone had been stolen during a recent trip to the chemist. Fortunately, she was able to trace its location using the in-built tracking technology on her iPad.

However, after a day had passed since it went missing, the Corrie star woke up the next morning and checked on its location once more. To her surprise, the phone could hardly have been closer: “The next morning, it’s in a house a few doors away from me. And I said, right, I’m going to that house.”

Eager to deal with the situation head-on, she revealed her young son’s reservations about taking matters into her own hands: “My little boy was saying, ‘Don’t go to the house.’”

After going into her neighbour’s house and confronting her about the situation, Claire was surprisingly just handed the phone back. However, the move landed her in a bit of trouble with the police, as she added: “The police told me off for going to the house, but anyway, nothing was stopping me.”

She went on to say that a similarly frustrating ordeal nearly happened again recently. After returning to the same chemist to pick up her next prescription, she handed her phone to a member of staff.

Despite only a minute passing, she completely forgot she had done it—leaving her momentarily convinced her phone had been stolen again.

After “accusing everyone” of taking it, the staff member humorously held it up from behind the counter, prompting Claire to realise her mistake and laugh at how easily she had forgotten.

Away from the recent mishap, Claire has seen her career soar in recent years after joining Coronation Street in 2023, where she has played Cassie Plummer ever since.

Since making her debut on the cobbles two years ago, some of her biggest storylines have seen her romantically linked with Corrie legend Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), as well as a dramatic arc earlier this year in which she overmedicated Ken Barlow (William Roache).

In a storyline that gripped viewers, Cassie knew the only way she could keep her job as Ken’s carer was if he remained unwell and unable to care for himself. In a bid to stay employed, she deliberately overmedicated the Corrie veteran.
