A new series of The Hit List returned to our screens this evening, with series 8 airing on BBC One at 5.45pm. The show is hosted by the couple Rochelle and Marvin Humes. In each show, three pairs of contestants put their music knowledge to the ultimate test as they attempt to name as many songs and artists as possible.
The songs played are all hits from a wide range of music genres from the 1950s to today, meaning the whole family can play, even play along at home too. This week’s contestants were father and son Tom and Paul from Liverpool, Nottingham married couple Joy and Joe, and Sheffield best friends Izzy and Ellie.
Izzy and Ellie have impressed viewers so far, despite being the youngest contestants at 18. They have answered a series of answers correctly from a variety of different genres and artists. One of the songs they correctly answered was Belinda Carlisle’s Heaven Is a Place on Earth, released in 1987.
On X formerly known as Twitter, @debC62 said: “These teams are all so good. I was very sceptical that the girls would do well but they proved me wrong! #thehitlist.”
@CliffordH commented: “#TheHitList there’s been no “before my time” with Izzy and Ellie” and @VictoriaDan wrote “Absolutely fantastic that Izzy & Ellie have gone through! My favourites tonight.”
The user added: “Speaking of Izzy & Ellie, where are they pulling these answers from?? Presumably there’s an oldies radio station / TikTok / other young people thing that they listen to.”
Another X user posted: “Belinda Carlisle on #thehitlist and being identified by a couple of 18-year-old girls. Great work,” and Luke Hayes wrote “Izzy and Ellie listening to every compilation album ever #TheHitList.”

Round 1 is called ‘5 of 5 from 5’. In this round, five seconds of five songs are played – one song from each of the last five decades, starting from today’s charts and going all the way back to the 70s. Each pair has the chance to put 5 points on the scoreboard, all they have to do is correctly name the track and the artist.
Round 2 is all about speed and quick-thinking. The teams are played a selection of clips from hit tracks, the split second they recognise a song they must press their button to get in first with an answer. It’s a race to be the first two teams with a full board of ten correct answers to go through to Round 3.
Round 3 is all about the intros of songs. Each pair has a clock with 45 seconds on it. They take it in turns to correctly name tracks and artists from a ‘Hit List’.
When their song starts playing, their clock starts to count down. They can shout out the answer as many times as they like but the clock will only stop once a correct answer is given. The pair that runs out of time first, leaves the show. The other team proceeds to the Final Chart Rundown.
The team that make it through to the Final Chart Rundown are playing for £10,000. In order to win the money they must climb to the Number One spot by correctly naming ten songs and artists from a themed Hit List. They have two choices of Hit Lists to pick from.
