Kate Garraway had an on-air mishap while filling in for Lorraine Kelly this morning. Chatting about the modern trend of women keeping their maiden names, Kate shared a personal anecdote about her late husband Derek Draper’s emotional reaction to her taking his surname.
During the conversation, Kate recalled the time she was asked whether to list herself as “Garraway or Rumsey?” She recounted saying, “Definitely Kate Rumsey,” which led to Derek tearing up. However, Kate was unaware she had accidentally said Rumsey instead of Draper whilst recalling the story.

But then, Kate admitted she never actually made the switch after a mix-up during a flight.
Kate quickly realised her mistake and exclaimed, “Rumsey? ! My god, that’s my first husband, I’m in chaos this morning!” She swiftly corrected it to “Draper,” and apologised for the slip-up at the end of the segment.
Kate and Ian Rumsey were married from 1998 to 2002 after meeting at Meridian TV where Ian was her boss. Their marriage ended amidst rumours that Kate had thrown Ian out over an alleged affair, which he has consistently denied, reports the Mirror.
Speaking about their break up at the time, Kate expressed: “It’s always terribly sad when a marriage comes to an end. I’m disappointed that what’s a very private matter has been brought into the public domain. I was dismayed by reports in the papers because they are substantially inaccurate.”
Despite the split, Ian later became the boss of GMB in 2010.

Two years post her split with Ian, Kate found love again with Derek, introduced through a mutual friend. The couple got hitched a year later and welcomed two children, daughter Darcey and son Billy.
Tragically, in March 2020, Derek was placed into a medically induced coma and ventilator after contracting coronavirus. In early 2024, the TV presenter heartbreakingly announced that her husband had passed away due to a severe heart attack.
However, this wasn’t the only mishap Kate experienced on Tuesday morning’s show. She found herself in an embarrassing situation during the Good Morning Britain segment as she accidentally spilled her cup of tea all over the table.
As she was about to discuss the upcoming segments on the show, the star apologised to Lorraine for “ruining her studio” while she was seen mopping up the spilt tea.
