Robbie Williams has revealed he cried “happy, childlike tears” after making a £20,000 purchase. The singer uploaded a picture of himself to Instagram last week wearing glasses and holding a pipe in his mouth.
The former Take That star has successfully bid for Eric Morecambe’s accessories, admitting he has always seen the comedian as an “uncle of sorts”. Robbie shared his reason for splashing out on the items, with a lengthy Instagram statement.
He revealed he had treated himself to the present ahead of his 51st birthday, which is on February 13. Robbie said he was about to board a plane in Los Angeles at the time the auction was taking place so he had to place his faith Mike, who takes care of everything digital for the singer.
The dad-of-four turned to his wife, Ayda for advice. He asked her “What should I do Ayd’s?” to which she replied “Keep bidding”. Robbie said his wife responded with “the steely determination of someone bursting through an electronics store door on Black Friday.”
The Better Man star continued: “To be honest, I think we would have gone down with the bidding ship. Our determination now fully on some primal competitive and irrational s*** – “But darling, we’re now going through the children’s inheritance.”
Robbie told followers he had real tears after winning the auction, he stated: “Guess we all need friends-we-never-meet from off the telly. Eric has always been mine. An Uncle of sorts. To the very core of me, Eric Morecambe’s spirit has been salve for my soul.
“How Eric made me feel is how I want to make people feel. What a gift to be able to create such joy and have that joy be present just by thinking of them.” In a touching tribute to the comedian, Robbie wrote “Eric, you were and are the very best of the very best. That sunshine you asked for. You gave to me.”
Fans were moved by the touching words, many scenes of his new biopic ‘Better Man” showed a young Robbie watching Morecambe and Wise with his nan. One commenter said: “Absolutely love this. As a child from the same era when Morecambe and Wise WERE the best of prime time telly.”
Another added: “They are very cool! Wow! How is it looking through Eric’s eyes? It was an amazing auction wasn’t it! I came away with a couple of his jackets, and the special Dunhill keyrings.” Another said: “That is a wonderful memory to hold in your hands. He gave our generation such giggles. A funny funny man.”
