‘I’m a Molly-Mae fan but one thing about her documentary disappointed me’

Molly-Mae: Behind It All has just dropped on Amazon Prime and I binged all three episodes – here’s what I thought

Molly-Mae Hague’s new series is being touted as more than just a ‘break-up documentary’, but after binge-watching the first three episodes, it’s hard to think of a better label.

As a die-hard Love Island fan – I got hooked in season four and haven’t looked back since – I was over the moon to hear that the influencer was making a comeback on our screens in a raw and unfiltered format.

In contrast to her glossy villa persona, Molly-Mae: Behind It All offers fans a genuine glimpse into her everyday life, from the trials of motherhood to her guilty pleasure McDonald’s order. Speaking at the documentary’s launch, the 25 year old star hinted that viewers would be taken aback by how personal the six-part series gets.

She wasn’t wrong, and I was pleasantly surprised by how open the TV star is throughout the programme. However, she was also insistent that this is not simply a ‘break-up documentary’ – and I beg to differ, reports Lancs Live.

“Obviously, we do talk about the break-up and it [the documentary] does discuss the break-up and we’re very honest in what we share about the break-up. But it’s so much more than a break-up documentary, it focuses on parts of my life that I haven’t really delved into before,” she explained.

Tommy Fury and Molly-Mae Hague

Within moments of the first episode, we hear snippets of news presenters announcing Molly-Mae’s split from boxer Tommy Fury. My favourite bit, which I must confess made me chuckle more than once, was the male newsreader who quipped: “Some are even comparing it to this generation’s Charles and Diana.”

At the start of the show, I was still filled with hope. After all, I had only watched less than five minutes and there were two more episodes to enjoy. Sadly, the next hour or so followed the same pattern. Whenever Molly-Mae graced the screen, Tommy was sure to pop up on Facetime or in conversation.

While she was busy taking promotional snaps for her fashion brand, Maebe, Tommy briefly rang to update her on their little one, Bambi. This call, like many others throughout the series, sparked another round of straight-to-camera interviews discussing their split.

Now, it wouldn’t be fair to expect no mention of the break-up, as the pair’s sudden split last summer sent shockwaves across the internet. And rightly so, the 25 year olds fell in love on national TV and fans have been following their love story every step of the way.

But Molly-Mae is plenty fascinating without bringing up her ex-fiance. Watching her chat about alcohol addiction with her mum, Debbie, was a breath of fresh air, giving us a glimpse into the entrepreneur’s upbringing.

But, you’ve guessed it, the conversation revolved around Tommy’s alleged struggles with drinking and, consequently, their break up.

Another highlight from the series is Molly-Mae’s bond with her sister Zoe Rae, who confessed that she had a rocky relationship with Tommy. Unfortunately, their fun car ride scene in the first episode – where they burst into song Carpool Karaoke style – was cut short to delve into the break up.

If I had to pick the best of the three episodes that have just dropped on Amazon Prime, it would be episode two, and I reckon most viewers will agree. In this instalment, the former Love Island star heads back to her hometown Hitchin and charts her journey to fame; from working at her local Boots to becoming a social media sensation and then hitting the big time on ITV.

The episode beautifully captures why the mum-of-one is so adored, showing how she was once an ordinary girl who has since built an aspirational life for herself. But the Molly-Mae bubble is burst by episode three, which kicks off with a phone call between the exes.

To label Molly-Mae: Behind It All as more than a break up documentary is being kind, to say the least. It’s a break up documentary – but only one of the exes in question turned up for filming.
