Stars of major 90s hit show hint at comeback – 21 years later but without one iconic role

Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a 90s sensation that first captivated audiences worldwide with its magical charm 28 years ago, and there’s talk that it could be making a comeback

The stars of the major 90s hit show Sabrina the Teenage Witch have dropped a series hint that the show could be returning, with one major change. It comes 21 years after we last saw the series grace our screens with Melissa Joan Hart playing the lead role of Sabrina Spellman, who lived with her caring aunts, Hilda (played by Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick).

The sitcom revolved around the life of Sabrina, a teenage witch who navigated high school while mastering her supernatural abilities. Other notable characters in the series included Sabrina’s talking cat Salem, voiced by Nick Bakay, who constantly offered her terrible advice.

He would notoriously encourage Sabrina to use magic to solve a problem, which often left her in even thicker water. The show first aired in September 1996 and ran for seven seasons, totalling an impressive 163 episodes before wrapping up in April 2003.

Melissa Joan Hart has now revealed that there could be scope for the show to make a triumphant comeback but confessed that Salem’s character would have to change. When asked by People Magazine if the show could air today, the actress said: “Yes, I guess so. I think so.”

She added: “Some of Salem’s lines might have to change. Like he might’ve been a little racy, might have been a little inappropriate.” Melissa’s co-star Jenna Leigh Green (who played Libby Chessler) agreed and added: “I think there’s something about our show that there was … families watched together.

“There were things that went over kids’ heads that were for the adults. But that was mainly Salem’s lines.”

Talk of the show returning comes after Melissa delighted fans when she shared a series of photos alongside her Sabrina the Teenage Witch co-stars and on-screen aunts, Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick. The photos from October last year showed the trio out for dinner in Edinburgh at a place fittingly called The Witchery Hotel.

Melissa captioned the snap: “We had a lovely dinner @thewitcheryedin and I even got my beloved ciabatta bread! Thanks to Oliver for the tour of the property and taking such great care of this silly coven. @carolinerhea4real @bethabroderick.”

After the series ended in 2003, Melissa married Mark Wilkerson and they went on to welcome three sons together born in 2006, 2008 and 2012. The actress, now 48, continued her acting career with roles in Melissa and Joey from 2010 to 2015, among other film and TV projects like Holiday in Handcuffs, Nine Dead and No Good Nick.

There is a rebooted new version of Sabrina, called Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but stars Kiernan Shipka in the lead role instead.
