Gogglebox star Sid Siddiqui receives an outpouring of support after sharing a personal update.

Gogglebox star Sid Siddiqui celebrated a special occasion over the weekend as he turned 81. The much-loved family became part of the Channel 4 programme’s first series in 2013, featuring Baasit alongside his brothers Umar and Raza, and their father Sid. Their mum, Nasreen, decided not to feature on screen.

The Derby-based family are now audience favourites. Throughout their time on the programme, the family have consistently entertained viewers with their witty observations and amusing commentary on television’s biggest moments.

The official Siddiquis Instagram account posted a heartfelt message to their dad. It said: “Happy Birthday Dad aka Sid. Wishing you the most wonderful day! We love you.”

The family added: “Thank you for all the birthday love for dad! He’s had a bit of cake before filming. Having a birthday get together properly next week.”

Birthday messages from fans included: “Have a Wonderful Happy Birthday, may your day and year be filled with those you love, things that matter and above all joy.” Another fan said: “Happy birthday Sid.You are a joy to watch! Wishing you a very special day!”

Further responses were: “Happy birthday, wonderful man. Hope you have the best day celebrating with your lovely family” and “Amazing! Happy Birthday. Wonderful man, father and grandfather.”

Away from TV screens the family lead relatively normal lives. Sid, who has retired from engineering, enjoys leisure time alongside Raza, who has a career in hospitality management. Umar is a microbiologist and Baasit is an IT teacher.

Their Gogglebox journey began quite unexpectedly. Sid revealed that their initial expectation was to participate in the show for just a year.

The family shared details about their participation in an interview with Radio Times, Umar explained: “We did a bit of an audition, where people came round with a camera and some flash cards including images of Boris Johnson and Simon Cowell.

“They said, ‘right, just say the first thing that comes into your mind’ and whatever dynamic we had seemed to suit the show, because they asked us if we wanted to be part of it. And they’ve kept on asking us.”

Around six hours across two days each week is dedicated to filming with the production team, all while their partners and children opt to remain behind the scenes.

Nasreen previously explained why she chose not to appear on the show with her partner and sons. She said: “It’s not something for me, I don’t speak very good English and I’m very shy. It’s best left to the boys. You won’t get me on the TV.”
