Parents clashed with a rugby team at a match in South Africa as one woman slapped a player.
The incident took place in a match between derby rivals Bishops Diocesan College and South African College High School (SACS) last weekend.
A match-winning conversion decided the game in the closing stages, with Bishops taking the win. However, in the midst of the celebrations after the try was scored, chaos ensued on the sidelines, with parents getting involved in ugly scenes.
As Bishops celebrated in the background and marched towards the rest of their team, one Bishops player appeared to gloat in front of a SACS player, which sparked violence. Multiple bystanders attempted to get involved, with many trying to disperse the coming together.
One woman tried to pull a player aside, and was ushered away by the taller player. The latter ended up appearing to get slapped by the woman as they exchanged verbals.
Bishops confirmed to the Cape Argus on Monday that they are investigating the alleged slap. “While our investigation is ongoing at this stage, we strongly condemn this kind of behaviour, which is in clear breach of the school’s values and our expectations of our spectators and have apologised to the SACS headmaster and the player’s parents,” Bishops said.
SACS did not make a statement, with their personal assistant to the headmaster Liesel Jenkinson referring The Cape Argus to Western Cape Education Department (WCED) for comment.
