Vicky Pattison broke down in tears after an emotional confession from former Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Scanlon. Vicky, 37, says she regularly finds herself telling her nieces they will “break all of the boys’ hearts” when they’re older.
The former Geordie Shore star described it as one of her more “toxic moments” after a listener on her Get A Grip podcast wrote in saying they wanted their young daughter not to believe that “appearance equals value”.
Angela, 41, who has three sisters, says she found husband Roy Horgan would say their daughter was “so beautiful”. She said: “I would say, ‘Don’t say that’, I was like, ‘You’re strong and you’re so clever, and this and that’.
“I almost went the opposite direction to not refer to her face at all. And he was like, ‘I want to be able to tell my daughter she’s beautiful’ and I thought, ‘That’s also okay’, and sometimes we try to overcorrect and go in the opposite direction.”
It prompted Angela to admit that her own mother never complimented her appearance when she was a child. She said: “I don’t think that my mother has ever said to me, ‘You look really beautiful’.”
Vicky, starting to get emotional, replied: “I’m so sorry, I’m a f***ing nervous wreck tonight. You are so beautiful, you know that. You are so beautiful inside and out, but some mams struggle you know.
“My mam didn’t tell me she loved me until I was 21. She said it was just something they didn’t do in her generation.”
Angela responded: “I do think it is a generational thing and I think my mum does think I’m a bit fit. But I think it is that thing that you’re like, ‘Oh I never had those words land on me’.”
Angela went on to stress how she believes it is important to stress people’s positive qualities. She continued: “I have so many things that I can tell people, I think it’s just if you’re honing in…if beauty is the only thing that’s validated in you and valued in you, then you’ll start to think you’re hollow inside, so it’s about being broader.”
It led to Vicky recalling a recent moment when her husband Ercan Ramadan’s nieces and nephews were at their house. She said: “They’re all gorgeous, they all look like mini-hims, they’re incredible,
“The eldest was helping me film something and she was so articulate and smart and professional and I told her that and I watched her glow. Little girls need to hear they are more than just how they look.”
Vicky is among the celebrities currently competing on Strictly Come Dancing. She has been paired up with professional Kai Widdrington as they aim to lift the famous Glitterball Trophy.
Angela meanwhile starred in the show in 2023, being eliminated ninth with dancer Carlos Gu.
